Doris Cravens
NEW MADRID - Doris May (Tampling) Cravens, 92, passed away April 15, 2005, at the Golden Living Center in New Madrid.
She was born in London, England, May 15, 1922, to James and Maud Tampling and lived in London until being bombed out of their home by the Germans in World War II. They then evacuated to Oxford where she met her future husband, Mack Cravens Jr., who was stationed there serving in the U.S. Army. During the war, Doris contributed to the war effort by helping to build the Spitfire airplanes which were essential to the war effort. Because of this, she was featured in a U.S. magazine in an articled titled, "Wartime Engineers."
She and Mack were married after the war on Jan. 23, 1946, and she came to the United States as a war bride on the Queen Mary. Mack preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1988.
Doris was a loving mother to her two daughters and devoted Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a great love for children and was actively involved in Girl Scouting while raising her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeanette (Harvey) Graham of New Madrid and Julie (Matthew) Victor of Salem, Mo.; her grandchildren, Heather (Ben) Johnson of New Madrid, Tyler (Rachel) Victor of Columbia, Mo., Jessica (Roy) Stewart of St. Roberts, Mo., and Savannah Victor of Salem; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Glen Graham, and two brothers and four sisters.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid. The Rev. Eric Mattison will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Harvey Graham, Ben Johnson, Tyler Victor, Matthew Victor, Don Brown and U.S. Marine Sgt. Roy Stewart.
