Obituary

Horrell H. "Buddy" Townsend Jr., 85, died April 22, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Born Feb. 13, 1928, in New Madrid, he was the son of the late Horrell "Henderson" Townsend Sr., and Willie  Richardson Townsend. On Aug. 5, 1950, he married Nadine Steward, who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2009. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Julianne Townsend (in infancy) and Charlotte Townsend Basham; and his half brother, David A. Townsend. He graduated from New Madrid High School in 1946. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950, and served during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1953 with the rank of staff sergeant. Throughout his long life he was employed in the community in many capacities. Buddy began his career as an insurance agent with MFA Insurance in 1953. He was also a crop hail insurance adjuster, real estate agent and tax preparer for many years. In 1978, he was elected as New Madrid County treasurer, where he served four terms before his retirement on Dec. 31, 1994. Buddy was also active in the community, having served as alderman, fire chief, Boy Scoutmaster and a charter member of American Legion Brown Twitty Post 595. He was a 55-year member of the Masons and also served on the board of the New Madrid Historical Museum. He was a member of the New Madrid Eagles Lodge No. 4206 and a member of the Methodist Church in New Madrid for 73 years where he was a board trustee. In his earlier years, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and ham radio operator. He is survived by: one son, Horrell H. Townsend III of Gulfport, Miss.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Bob Rowe of Dexter and Charlotte Lee Townsend of New Madrid; two grandsons, Lewis F. "Derick" Hux and wife, Paige, of of DeSoto and Travis Townsend Hux and fiancee, Stella O'Neal of Kansas City, Mo.; two great-granddaughters, Rylie and Ryese Hux of DeSoto and one very special friend, Shelby Desmore. Visitation is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. today at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in New Madrid. Burial with full military rites will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid.
