Mary Louise Coffee, age 93, died October 10, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She was born August 5, 1920 in New Madrid County to Mary Evaline (Robinson) and Leroy Coffee. She was the first born of her seven siblings.
Louise graduated from Marston High School in 1940 and spent 46 years as a dedicated employee of Washington Manufacturing Company in St. Louis, Mo., Memphis and Nashville, Tn. After retiring, she moved to New Madrid, Mo. to be near her two surviving sisters, Mildred Sloas and Wilma Morlan. Two brothers (Mack and Doyle Sloas) and two sisters (Claydine and Claudine Sloas) preceded her in death.
Having no children of her own, she became the mother hen of all her nieces and nephews. She was their favorite "Aunt Lou". One of her nieces said of her Aunt Lou: " She was an amazing woman with an enduring feisty spirit. She was an eternal icon in our family." During Word War II, Louise tried to volunteer for the WACs, but she lacked one inch being tall enough.
Louise was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Madrid and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
Visitation is from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in New Madrid on Monday, October
14, 2013 where services will be conducted at 11:00 AM by Paster Eric Mattson and Patricia Mohler officiating. Burial will follow in Mounds Park Cemetery with Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid in charge of arrangements.
