Obituary

Verna Schmitt Patterson, 89, passed away on June 28, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau after being in ill health for several years. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of the Charleston Manor in Charleston. Mrs. Patterson was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Zeeland, N.D., to the late Henry and Bertha Diede Schmitt, and was the eldest of 12 children. On March 30, 1943, in Salt Lake City Utah, she was married to Delma D. Patterson, who preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 1973. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Harold Schmitt; a son, Charles E. "Chuck" Patterson, USMC; a sister, Florence Ladner; and a brother, Milton Schmitt. Survivors include: one daughter, Caralinia Daniels of New Madrid; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Diane Patterson of Poplar Bluff; grandsons, Jason Daniels of New Madrid and Steve and Sharon Fortner of St. Peters; six brothers, Clarence, Werner, Delmer, Donnie and Melvin Schmitt of the state of Washington, and Harvey Schmitt of Miami; two sisters, Edna Mills of Sycamore, Kan., and Betty Bolen of St. John, Ind.; ex son-in-law, Bobby and Judy Daniels of New Madrid; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was a homemaker all her life, as well as working as a sales clerk for several New Madrid businesses, cooked for the Eagles Club in Sikeston and sold Avon products. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening, baking and working with her flowers, as well as playing cards and dominoes with the "girls." She underwent breast cancer surgery at age 80 and was a nine-year survivor. Services for Mrs. Patterson will be held on Tuesday, July 2, at Richards Funeral Home, 436 Main Street in New Madrid. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 8 p.m. with Jason Redden officiating. A family luncheon will be served by the New Madrid Baptist Church at  1240 Scott Street in New Madrid, at 3 p.m. prior to services.
